Where Are the Most Aggressive Drivers in America?
Can we just take a second and talk about sending a care package full of Honolulu Chill Pills to Arizona? If we all chip in, as a country, I think we can really do some good in The Grand Canyon State.
Phoenicians are the most aggressive on highways and city roads, and Tucsonites are making a strong case in second place on city streets. We think if Tucson had more highways, they might claim a spot in that top three, too.
How did we figure out which drivers were most aggressive?
Across our huge and geographically diverse user base we collect a ton of metrics for drivers in cities around the US. To define aggression, we take a look at the “acceleration profile” of each driver. To build a profile, we consider all times a driver accelerates or brakes over a period of time. We don’t just look at the hard events, which is when a driver slams their foot on the gas or the brake. We don’t consider speed, just how drivers change their speed.
We can build profiles for all kinds of things, not just cities. We can look at drivers of different car manufacturers, states, etc. and group them together to develop the overall aggression for those categories.
So, we can say things like BMW drivers in LA are way more aggressive than Kia drivers in St. Louis by slicing the data in different ways to see if any interesting trends appear.
Do we know what makes them aggressive?
That’s a little trickier, and not really something we can measure with the data we collect. We can only point out what the data tells us. Any guesses we make would be purely speculative.
From this graph, though, we just have to say that the citizens of Phoenix aren’t playing any games out there..
Did we get it right?
We’d love for some of you to weigh in if you see your city on the graph. Any surprises? LA: are you mad that you’re not number one in the aggression category?
